Kacho Shima Kosaku, Section Chief Shima Kousaku, 課長 島耕作

The series "kosaku shima" follows the life of kosaku shima, a white-collar worker who dedicates himself to his company. at the beginning of the show, shima is a section chief at hatsushiba electric, a large conglomerate. he later gets promoted to division chief and eventually becomes a manager and executive director. the title of the series changes with each promotion. hatsushiba electric in the fiction is similar to panasonic or matsushita electric, where hirokane worked before, and accurately depicts japanese corporate culture.

Some volumes of Kachou Shima Kousaku were published as bilingual English-Japanese editions by Kodansha. It also had two chapters published in English in the educational publication Mangajin from August to September, 1993, in issues #28 and #29. Kachou Shima Kousaku has also been published in French and German.
