This artwork depicts a caricature of goethe's "faust," which captures the surreal and imaginative style of animation from that era. in this story, mephistopheles, confident in his power, causes chaos on earth by sending angels to the ground. god then orders him to send faust to hell. however, before doing so, god gives new life to an angel who has fallen to earth as princess margarete. while studying, faust feels helpless and believes he will never achieve his goals. suddenly, mephistopheles appears in front of him and they sign a contract where faust promises to go to hell if mephistopheles fulfills his desires. with magic, mephistopheles transforms faust into a young man and sends him to the town to meet princess margarete. meanwhile, faust is tasked with finding the most beautiful goddess in the world, helen, by the king, father of margarete. along with mephistopheles, they journey to the mountains of hartz where devils are said to gather on walpurgis night.
