Genki Horiguchi was five years old when his mother passed away shortly after birth. As a result, he grew up under the care of only his father, Shark Horiguchi, who was a professional boxer but eventually became an itinerant one due to financial difficulties. Despite these challenges, Genki admired his father's strength and believed that one day he too would become a champion like him. His dream was to follow in his father's footsteps and become a strong boxer.
Ganbare Genki won the 22nd Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category in 1977.
