Kaiji is an unemployed person who steals car emblems and slashes tires regularly. one day, he meets a man named endou, who claims to be a debt collector. the reason for his visit is that kaiji had previously co-signed a loan with takeshi furuhata, which was not paid off when takeshi disappeared. as a result, the loan fell on kaiji.
endou tells kaiji about a way to clear the interest compounded debt of 3,850,000 yen by getting on a boat with other debtors and gambling with loaned money. the few who win will pay off their debts, while others will get deeper into debt and have to work to pay it off. kaiji is hesitant at first but eventually agrees to join the boat in order to clear his debt and make some extra money.
