In essence, there is a conflict between two nations, Koukoku (the imperial country) and Teikoku (the empire). The protagonist, Shinjou Naoe, who serves as First Lieutenant in the Koukoku military, finds himself embroiled in this long-drawn war. A surprise attack by the Teikoku East division decimates the Koukoku North Defense Forces. As a result, Shinjou and his 600-man battalion are tasked with holding off the advancing Teikoku army, which consists of approximately 40,000 soldiers.
Koukoku no Shugosha is an adaptation of Satou Daisukes alternate-history war novels by the same title.Two times in a row, in 2005 and 2006, the manga series was chosen as Jury Recommended Work at the 9th and 10th Japanese Media Arts Awards Festival in manga division. It was also one of nominee works for the 1st Manga Taisho Award in 2008.
