Punpun Onodera is an 11-year-old boy residing in Japan who possesses a hopelessly romantic and idealistic nature. His life takes a sudden turn when he encounters Aiko Tanaka in his class. Through this encounter, he learns about the challenges of maintaining relationships and the difficulties of transitioning from childhood innocence to the complexities of adulthood. When his father assaults his mother one night, Punpun discovers that those he admired were not as perfect as he believed. As his problems escalate, his reserved character transforms into voluntary seclusion, exacerbating his emotional turmoil and propelling him further down the path of maturity in this grim coming-of-age tale.
