Dr. kaneda had been working on creating giant robot warriors during world war ii, but his plans were cut short when allied bombs destroyed his facility and killed him. ten years later, two surviving prototypes, #26 and 27, were discovered by criminals who used them to commit crimes. shotaro kaneda, the son of dr. kaneda, investigated these activities and learned that the villains were after the twenty-eighth robot in the series, believed to be the most powerful. in a race against time, shotaro found the robot first with dr. shikishima, his father's colleague who was also thought to have been killed by the allied bombing. together they decided to dedicate tetsujin 28-go (the official designation of the robot) to peace rather than war.
