Lucy Maud Montgomery, known as "Maud" by her family and friends, was a renowned Canadian author who gained fame through her series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables, published in 1908. The first novel quickly became successful, introducing the world to Anne, an orphaned girl whose story made Montgomery famous worldwide. Following this success, Montgomery wrote several more novels featuring Anne as the main character, ultimately publishing a total of 25 books, including short stories and poems. Many of these works were set on Prince Edward Island, Canada, which became known as literary landmarks. In recognition of her contributions to literature, Montgomery was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1935.
