During his time in school, Kurumada Masami was greatly influenced by Motomiya Hiroshis Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou. This sparked his interest in becoming a mangaka. In the 3rd year of high school, he submitted his first work to Weekly Shounen Jump. Unfortunately, it did not get accepted. However, when Kurumada went to the company seeking an explanation, he encountered Inoue Koo and became his assistant. At age 20, Kurumada officially debuted with his manga Sukeban Arashi.
