Sugii Gisaburou is an anime director and Nihonga artist who has worked in various forms of Japanese commercial anime production, including sophisticated projects like Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru and Murasaki Shikibus Genji Monogatari, as well as martial arts mayhem in Street Fighter II and children's productions like Jack to Mame no Ki and Super Doll Licca-chan. He was born on August 20, 1940, in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. At the age of nineteen, he became an intermediary with Toei Doga. In the early sixties, he worked for Osamu Tezuka's Mushi Productions. Since then, he has worked for several studios but most of his work has been with Group Tac. He is currently on the faculty at Kyoto Seika University and a member of Japan Animation Creators Association (JAniCA). His brother is the ex-Tatsunoko Production animator 杉井興治.
