ALI PROJECT is a Japanese band with an aristocratic image consisting of lead singer/lyricist Arika Takarano (宝野アリカ) and musician/arranger Mikiya Katakura (片倉三起也). The band's early music style was light, cheerful or refreshing. However, their sound has evolved to a darker and more mysterious tone, which lead singer Arika Takarano refers to as the transition from White Alice to Black Alice. Though they primarily perform in the "Black Alice" phase, they occasionally sing in the "White Alice" style as well. The band made their indie debut in 1988 with Fantastic Garden and was later classified under the progressive rock genre due to being included in Tatsumi Takayukis book Philosophy of Progressive Rock. They changed their name and made their major debut in 1992 with Fall in love, maiden. Their records are released by various labels such as Toshiba-EMI, Victor Entertainment, and Tokuma Japan. ALI PROJECT is known for having their songs featured in several anime opening and ending sequences, notably Noir and Rozen Maiden series.
