The film "Jarinko Chie," directed by Takahata in 1981, is an adaptation of Etsumi HARUKI's popular manga. It follows the story of ten-year-old Chie, who runs her family diner while her unemployed yakuza father and separated mother struggle to make ends meet. Despite its somber premise, the movie is a hilarious comedy that has become a beloved classic in Japan. The film takes place in Osaka, which boasts a distinct culture from Tokyo. Following the success of the movie, a TV series was produced, with Takahata serving as the chief director.
