Rune Balot was once a teenage prostitute living in Mardock City. She was picked up by an ambitious casino manager named Shell who gave her everything she desired. Feeling grateful for his kindness, Balot couldn't help but wonder why he had done so much for her. To find out more about him, she researched his past on a computer. However, this turned out to be a mistake that would change her life forever. When Shell discovered what she had done, he tried to kill her by blowing up her car. Due to the high crime rate in Mardock, law enforcement has enacted "Scramble 09," which allows them to take extreme measures to revive crime witnesses. A professor was able to bring Balot back from the dead by reassembling her body with reinforced synthetic fiber. When she woke up, her confused state eventually led her to seek revenge against Shell, who was revealed as her killer.
