Hitohito Tadano is a typical teenager who starts his freshman year with the intention of staying out of trouble and fitting in with others. However, things don't go as planned when he sits next to Shouko Komi, the school's most popular girl. His classmates see him as someone they need to eliminate to get closer to her.
Komi is a stunning young woman with long, dark hair who commands attention wherever she goes. Despite being adored by everyone, she struggles with social anxiety and communication difficulties that make it hard for her to connect with others. When left alone in the classroom, Komi communicates through writing on the blackboard. Tadano picks up a chalk and starts writing as well, which leads him to discover that Komi's goal is to make 100 friends during high school. He decides to help her achieve this by becoming her first friend.
