In this new life, Will is born into a world where he has no memories of his past. As he awakens, he finds himself surrounded by three beings who have taken him under their wing: a skeleton named Blood, a ghost called Gus, and a mummy known as Mary. They raise him in the ruins of a city that has long been abandoned. Each of these guardians teaches Will something different-Blood shows him how to fight, Gus imparts knowledge of magic, and Mary instructs him in religion and responsibility. Above all else, they teach him love. As Will grows older, he begins to understand the world around him. At some point in his life, every adult must swear an oath to a god of their choosing. The strength of this pledge determines how much blessing that deity bestows upon them. With his departure imminent, Will must prepare himself for the truth about his undead guardians and venture forth into a world that none of them have ever seen before. However, he discovers that every oath must be fulfilled, regardless of its consequences.
