Asuna Yuuki is doing exceptionally well in both her social and academic pursuits, putting her on track to excel in high school entrance exams. Her friend and classmate, Misumi "Mito" Tozawa, advises her to take a brief respite from studying and join him for the launch of Sword Art Online (SAO), an eagerly anticipated online virtual reality multiplayer game. Asuna agrees and meets Mito in the game. However, fate takes a cruel turn when all players logged into SAO are trapped inside permanently. The only way out is to complete all one hundred levels of the game, but with the added complication that dying within the game will result in real-life death. With SAO now transformed into a deadly obstacle course, Asuna and other gamers, including Kirito Kirigaya, must adapt and persevere while competing against each other to reach the top.

Sword Art Online: Progressive Movie - Hoshi Naki Yoru no Aria has been licensed by Aniplex of America as Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night with the launch of the Official USA Website on November 19, 2020. Aniplex announced the movies theatrical and IMAX release in the USA on December 3, 2021.The movies first limited edition advance ticket was released from December 28, 2020 to January 11, 2021 on the Aniplex+ website, which recorded the worlds fastest advance ticket sale.
