Ten years have passed since Nagomu Irino left his home in pursuit of his dream that ultimately failed. He has now decided to return after hearing about the hospitalization of his father, who owns the Kyoto sweets store Ryokushou. Concerned that no one would inherit the shop if his father passes away, Nagomu prepares himself to embrace his family's legacy and the art of making sweets.
Upon returning home, Nagomu discovers that his father has already chosen a successor-a 10-year-old girl named Itsuka Yukihira, who was abandoned at Ryokushou by her father for unknown reasons. Despite being part of the family and now serving as the shop's poster girl, Itsuka still longs to see her father and follows all possible clues in hopes of finding him.
Nagomu's mother asks him to act as Itsuka's father, hoping that doing so will help her open up and relieve some of her pain, even if only slightly. Initially on bad terms, Nagomu and Itsuka gradually learn more about each other, discovering their shared love for Ryokushou and its confections. As they begin to form a relationship as child and father figure, their actions make life around them a little sweeter.
