Three years have elapsed since the Hiroshima bombing, and Gen is now in fourth grade. Despite the devastation caused by the explosion, commerce has resumed in the area. However, life remains challenging for Gen and his family as they struggle to survive amidst the ruins of their city. His mother's health continues to deteriorate due to radiation sickness, leaving Gen to scavenge for scrap metal to provide for himself and his remaining loved ones. As time passes, Gen befriends a group of orphaned children led by a tough-as-nails older child and including a young girl with severe burn scars from the day of the bombing. An elderly man suffering from depression also joins the group as they band together to support each other and form a makeshift family. Despite the harsh realities, many orphans continue to die alone, and the lingering effects of the explosion can still be seen everywhere.
