In essence, "Mushi" refer to the most fundamental forms of existence in the world that lack specific objectives or purposes beyond merely existing. They transcend moral judgments such as good and evil and can manifest in various forms, including those found in nature like plants, diseases, and even natural phenomena like rainbows. While "Mushi" may be considered a form of life, they are complex entities whose full understanding is difficult to grasp due to limited information about them among humans. Ginko, a character from the Mushishi series, is constantly seeking answers regarding the nature and purpose of these enigmatic beings. As such, he pursues rumors related to their occurrences in hopes of uncovering their place in the hierarchy of life and potentially discovering the meaning of existence itself.
Mushishi is an adaptation of Yuki Urushibaras award-winning manga of the same name. The series adapts the first 26 chapters of the manga, adapting one per episode. The anime aired these stories in a different order than that of the manga.The series won the Tokyo Anime Award in the Television category in 2006. The series premiered on October 23, 2005, but went on hiatus on March 12, 2006 after having aired 20 episodes. Broadcast resumed on May 15, and aired the remaining 6 episodes, concluding on June 19, 2006.
