In order to prevent widespread famine due to a catastrophic drought, the Star Readers in Shin Yogo must come up with a plan. Legend has it that the first emperor, along with eight brave warriors, defeated a water demon to save their land from a great drought. If another water demon were to appear, its death could bring salvation. However, this time the water demon is inside Prince Chagum, who must be sacrificed by his father's order to save the empire. Meanwhile, Balsa, a mysterious mercenary with a sacred vow, arrives in Shin Yogo on business and saves Chagum from an assassination attempt. She is then tasked with protecting him from the emperor and his hunters. Seirei no Moribito follows Balsa as she embarks on her journey to protect Chagum while exploring themes of life, nature, family, and the bonds that form between strangers.
Seirei no Moribito is based on Nahoko Uehashis Moribito novel series. It adapts the first novel in the series, and greatly expands the midsection of the novel.
