In 2046, humans' trust towards robots decreases and life becomes more dangerous for beings known as Seconds, who are the most recent line of robots. Detective Ross Sylibus lives in this world and gets transferred to Mars after his partner is killed by a robot. Upon arriving on Mars, he investigates a murder involving a country singer on his flight. He meets his new partner, Armitage, a female cop with a major attitude. A series of murders ensues as more women are killed. As the investigation progresses, a secret is uncovered: there's another line of robots called Thirds. More and more Thirds go missing due to a serial killer who aims to eliminate all Thirds. Armitage reveals that she herself is a Third in her pursuit of justice for the murdered victims.
