In feudal Japan, Jubei Kibagami roams as a swordsman-for-hire after being betrayed and left without a master. He has grown weary of political factions' schemes and warfare. However, his peaceful existence is disrupted when he encounters and saves the female ninja Kagero from a man capable of turning his body into stone. As the last surviving member of her clan, Kagero continues her team's mission to investigate a mysterious disease that wiped out an entire village. Jubei initially wants no part in this but is forced to join due to the stone-like man's allies being ninjas with supernatural powers known as the Devils of Kimon. To make matters worse, a government spy poisons him and offers an antidote if he can uncover the true intentions of the Devils of Kimon and their connection to the disease. The trail leads Jubei to shadow leaders, a plot to overthrow the government, and a long-lost acquaintance.
