The novel "Hourou Musuko" by Takako Shimura follows the story of two childhood friends, Shuuichi Nitori and Yoshino Takatsuki, who both struggle with their gender identity as they enter puberty. While Shuuichi is biologically male but identifies as female, Yoshino is a tomboy who does not identify as a girl despite being biologically female. Despite having similar feelings of discomfort related to their gender identity, the two friends find solace in each other and share a secret. However, when they transfer to a new school and attempt to make new friends, they must navigate unfamiliar waters and deal with the harsh realities of growing up, transsexuality, relationships, and acceptance. Through their struggles, Shuuichi and Yoshino learn about themselves and face difficult choices as they discover their true selves.
