A Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) officer named Youji Itami is heading to a doujin convention in Ginza, Tokyo when he encounters an unexpected portal resembling a large gate. From this gate, supernatural creatures and warriors dressed in medieval armor emerge, wreaking havoc throughout the city. Despite his off-duty status, Youji quickly takes action to save as many lives as possible while the rest of the JSDF focuses on stopping the invasion. Three months later, Youji is appointed leader of a special recon team tasked with traveling beyond the gate into an unknown world known as the "Special Region." Their mission is to gather information and establish peaceful ties with the locals in order to avoid war between both sides. If they fail, it could lead to a devastating conflict.
