Despite her name meaning "snow white," Shirayuki is a lively girl with fiery red hair living in the land of Tanbarun where she works diligently at her apothecary shop. Her life takes an unexpected turn when Prince Raji, the silly ruler of Tanbarun, notices her and tries to force her into becoming his concubine. Unwilling to give up her independence, Shirayuki cuts off her long red hair and escapes into the forest where she is rescued by Zen Wistalia, the second prince from a neighboring kingdom, and his two companions. In gratitude for their help, Shirayuki decides to pursue a career as the court herbalist in Zens country, Clarines. Akagami no Shirayuki-hime follows Shirayukis journey towards a new life at the royal palace of Clarines while also depicting Zen's struggle to become a worthy prince. As they walk their own paths, loyal friendships are formed and dangerous enemies emerge as Shirayuki and Zen learn to support each other.
