In a vast desert world, there exists an island known as the mud whale. this island contains an ancient town where many of its inhabitants possess supernatural abilities but face untimely deaths due to their powers. the village archivist, chakuro, is young and inquisitive, spending his time documenting new islands that are discovered. however, each island is similar to the others, with only remnants left behind by those who once lived there. as another island appears on the horizon after six months of absence, chakuro and his friends join a scouting party. during their expedition, they discover evidence of an ancient civilization. in one of its ruins, chakuro finds a girl whose presence will change not only his life but also the world within the mud whale as he knows it.
