Kei Narutani and his childhood friend Song Minghua are Chinese refugees who flee from a mysterious organization known as the Zai that terrorizes their country and its people. During their escape to Japan, they are rescued by an unusual red aircraft. Kei becomes fascinated with this aircraft and meets its pilot, Gripen, who is an "Anima" - a unique type of airplane called a "Daughter." Gripen goes by the name JAS-39F fighter aircraft. Kei develops a close bond with Gripen and is later recruited by the Japan Self-Defense Force to help her overcome difficulties in flying. Joining him are Eagle, an F-15J-ANM carefree individual, and Phantom, an RF-4EJ-ANM proud member of the squadron. Together, they battle against the invading Zai, forming the last line of defense against the threatening alien force.
