Thirty years ago, a supermassive "spatial quake" occurred on the Eurasian continent, causing widespread devastation and resulting in over 150 million deaths. These quakes have since been intermittent but still pose a threat. Shidou Itsuka is an average high school student who lives with his younger sister Kotori. When Tengu City faces imminent danger from a spatial quake, he rushes to save her and discovers a mysterious girl at the source of the eruption, who turns out to be a "Spirit." This leads Shidou to become embroiled in a conflict between the girl and the Anti-Spirit Team. However, there is also a third party called Ratatoskr, commanded by Kotori herself, which seeks to save Spirits rather than destroy them. Instead of fighting against the Spirits, Ratatoskr believes that Shidou should win their hearts through love. The fate of the world now rests on Shidou's ability to charm and date these Spirits.

Date A Live adapts the first 4 novels of Koushi Tachibanas light novel series of the same name.The anime premiered on March 31, 2013 on Niconico. On TV, it premiered on April 6, 2013 on Tokyo MX. The Blu-ray Box features an additional 35 minutes worth of content. Due to the Blu-ray Box being released after FUNimation Entertainments release, this additional material was not included in any English release.
