In yorknew city, leorio paladiknight and kurapika investigate rumors of a boy with scarlet red eyes. they believe this person is from the now-defunct kurta clan, and kurapika hopes to find another survivor besides himself. however, during their investigation, kurapika loses both his eyes after an attack from someone who seems to be his childhood friend. leorio tends to kurapikas wounds and sends for gon freecss and killua zoldyck to help retrieve his eyeballs. their search leads them face-to-face with the phantom troupe, a notorious group of thieves known for massacring the entire kurta clan five years ago due to their scarlet eyes that change color during moments of rage. the hunter x hunter movie 1: phantom rouge follows leorio and kurapika's quest to locate gon's eye and catch the thief, leading them deep into phantom troupes past. along the way, they encounter a mysterious girl who seems to be connected to it all.
