Gon Freecss (ゴン゠フリークス, Gon Furīkusu) is a young man who dreams of becoming a Hunter in order to find his father. As the son of Ging Freecss, Gon's motivation for pursuing this career stems from his desire to understand why his father chose to become a Hunter over spending time with him. Throughout the series, Gon has been the main protagonist, displaying an athletic and adventurous nature. However, he struggles with mathematics and can be impulsive at times, which often leads to reckless actions that result in harm to himself. Despite these flaws, Gon possesses a great deal of talent for his age and feels compelled to prove his worth whenever his abilities are questioned by others.
During the Yorknew City arc, alongside with Killua and Leorio, Gon helped Kurapika avenge his clan in attempt to exterminate the Phantom Troupe.
He is put into a hospital in a comatous state in extremely precarious conditions and requires life support.
In the Chimera Ant arc, once in front of the Kite's reanimated body, Neferpitou reveals the man is dead and she cannot bring him back to life. Gon's sense of guilt makes him feel responsible for Kite's demise, Gon unleashes all the anger and sorrow he was keeping within himself, demanding from his Nen all the power he will ever have without caring about the consequences. In the aftermath, he falls unconscious and Killua carries him to the rest of the Extermination Team.
Gon is an Enhancer, who are known for being simple-minded and determined. This determination and talent lead to both potential allies and potential enemies trusting in him and taking his side. He has inhuman senses; Gon has a heightened sense of smell almost like a dogs, he also has very good vision, as well as having a very keen taste.
Since his early youth, due to his fathers absence and Mitos dislike of Ging, Gon was told that his parents died in an accident when he was a baby. At the age of nine, Gon was rescued from an angry mother Foxbear by a man named Kite—a professional Hunter and a student of Gons long lost father. After hitting Gon in the face, Kite attempted to kill the Foxbears cub but Gon protected it. Kite admitted to looking for Ging as a final test to be seen by his master as a true Hunter.

After being healed by Alluka Zoldyck, Gon traveled to the World Tree, accompanied by Killua and Alluka. Gon then climbs the World Tree and meets Ging. He tells Gon about the "outside world", and the fact that the Chimera Ants originated from said place. He explains to Gon that the world is a vast place with so many secrets and that he should take his time on his own journey.
After beating the game ,Greed Island, created by his dad, Gon reverted the card he claimed as a price , Paladins Necklace, to Accompany after finding out that the person entered the game after him isnt Goreinu, the person to enter the game after him,but an anagram of "Ging". He proclaimed the card Accompany wil take him and Killua to Ging. However, they end up teleporting to Kite , Gings former student.

Gon and Killua meet a boy named Zushi and his disciple Wing at the Heavens Arena. After reaching to the 150th floor on the Heavens Arena, Wing teaches them about the true Nen. At the end of the month, Wing allows Gon and Killua to train along with Zushi and help them to improve their Nen.
After gon passed the 287th Hunter Exam, Gon is at a loss as to how to accomplish his immediate goal. After Killua showed the power gap between his rivals by drawing a line on the ground, Killua suggest training their combat skills and earning money at the Heavens Arena.
