In the novel "I Have Always Lived in an Apartment," Hachiman Hikigaya is depicted as a cynical and narcissistic high school student who believes that happiness during youth is nothing but a falsehood. He strongly holds this belief, asserting that anyone who claims otherwise is simply deceiving themselves. As punishment for writing an essay critical of modern social relationships, his teacher assigns him to join the Volunteer Service Club, which aims to support students in achieving their goals. Along with Yukino Yukinoshita, the only other member of the club, Hachiman finds himself confronted with the problems of others, a situation he had never anticipated.
