The new version of AC has a considerable amount of footage that was not included in the original. It also includes around 1000 revised scenes. This results in an additional 26 minutes to the film's runtime. Some of these new scenes include more detail about Geostigma, Denzel and Kadajs origins, as well as a longer fight between Cloud and Sephiroth. The Japanese release features a new ending track called "Safe and Sound" by Kyosuke Himuro, with additional lyrics from Gerard Way. This replaces the previous track "Calling." However, in the North American version, "Calling" remains and "Safe and Sound" is absent.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete is the director's cut of the 2005 film and was first announced at the 2006 Tokyo Game Show. Two versions of the film were released in Japan on April 16, 2009, with one edition releasing with a demo of the upcoming Final Fantasy game Final Fantasy XIII. It was later released in the US on June 2, 2009 and in the UK on July 27, 2009.
