The narrative revolves around Benio "Haikara-san" Hanamura, who was raised by her father, a high-ranking official in the Japanese army after losing her mother at an early age. Due to this upbringing, she has developed into a tomboy, defying traditional notions of femininity in Japan. She is skilled in kendo, enjoys drinking sake, dresses in Western clothing styles instead of the traditional kimono, and places more value on literature than household chores. Furthermore, Benio rejects the concept of arranged marriages and advocates for women's right to pursue their careers and marry for love.
