Narumi Katou is a middle-aged man who suffers from ZONAPHA Syndrome, a rare disease that causes severe seizures at random and can only be cured by watching someone laugh. During his part-time job, he meets Masaru Saiga, the new owner of Saiga Enterprises after his father's death. However, other members of Masarus family are trying to assassinate him and claim the fortune for themselves. Narumi helps Masaru escape and fights off their pursuers, only to discover they are sentient humanoid puppets with superhuman strength. Just as he is about to lose, a white-haired girl named Shirogane appears and summons another puppet from Masarus suitcase, claiming to be his guardian. The story follows three people whose lives intersect and diverge as they uncover the mysteries of an ancient tale of love and betrayal between humans and puppets in the Karakuri Circus.
