Mauville City is home to Wattson, an Electric-type Pokémon expert who holds the Dynamo Badge. His name is derived from watt, while his Japanese name may be a reference to Nikola Tesla. Despite being an old man, he's almost always seen smiling and has several electrical doors in his gym that can be opened by stepping on switches. Although Wattson's puzzle isn't very difficult, it's still less challenging than Flannery's. After defeating him, you receive TM34 Shockwave, an electric attack. In the anime, Wattson enjoys telling jokes and takes visitors on a roller coaster ride that ends with a mechanical Raikou. Ash surprisingly defeats him easily with Pikachu, which is unusual as Electric-type moves are not very effective against Electric-type Pokémon. Despite this setback, Wattson plans to retire from his Gym Leader post but regains his fighting spirit after helping defeat Team Rocket. It's revealed that Pikachus electric attacks were temporarily supercharged when he destroyed the mechanical Raikou, allowing him to overwhelm Wattsons Pokémon. Ash tries to return his Dynamo Badge and earn it back fairly, but Wattson asks him to keep it because he realizes he needs to continue training. Later in the series, they have a rematch, with Manectric defeating Torkaoal.
