Iruka Umino, a trainer at the Ninja Academy, bears a distinctive scar on his face from childhood. His name translates to "sea dolphin," and he was born with this marking. Twelve to thirteen years ago, Konoha was attacked by the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox, resulting in many casualties. Iruka's parents were still fighting when they were killed during the battle. He was saved from harm by an unknown ninja and wanted to remain behind but was brought back for protection. Afterward, everyone at the Ninja Academy made fun of him, comparing him to Naruto Uzumaki. Despite this, Iruka often found solace near the Killed in Action monument where his parents were listed and would cry there. The Third Hokage tried to cheer him up, but Mizuki, a close friend at the time, only pretended to care about him to gain approval from the Hokages.
Iruka's abilities are not well-known, but he is proficient in basic ninjutsu and genjutsu, as seen when he disguised himself as an enemy ninja and threatened Team 7 during a pretest for the Chunin Exam. The anime filler episodes also show him using Sealed Bomb Square Release (方爆法陣, Fūbaku Hojin), which involves setting up an array of exploding tags that detonate once the target enters. Since only the target is affected by this technique, it suggests that Iruka may be skilled in this area.
