Ataru is a student at Tomobiki High School who faces an abundance of bad luck due to being born on the unluckiest day according to Buddhist tradition. Despite his lecherous and lazy nature, there are moments where he tries to escape from Lum and flirts with other women. However, deep down, Ataru has feelings for Lum and his ultimate goal is to live in a harem of exotic and beautiful women, including Lum and her alien friends. His pick-up techniques may be seen as creepy by some, but he persists in asking for a woman's name, phone number, and address once he sets his sights on someone. No force can stop him from pursuing his desired female, not even those from Earth or outer space. In the later episodes, it is revealed that Lum was indeed the one Ataru truly loved.
