While ataru moroboshi is not particularly notable, his bad luck stands out like an alien's horns. when earth faces a threat from aliens known as the oni, ataru is chosen to represent humanity in a duel against one of them. fortunately for him, the duel turns out to be a game of tag, and his opponent is lum, daughter of the onis leader. lum values her personal dignity over victory, which ataru discovers when he takes her bikini top, thus winning the game. however, misfortune strikes again when lum misunderstands ataru's promise to marry shinobu miyake as his desire to wed her himself. as an alien princess, she moves in with him, forcing ataru to navigate the consequences of his womanizing ways while keeping lum happy and flirting with every woman he meets.
