In Rolans childhood, his parents died under mysterious circumstances, leaving him to live on the streets as a poor and starving child. He was constantly ignored by others and was at risk of dying from hunger. One day, while wandering through the village, Rolan encountered some kids who stole food from him. The owner of the stolen food accused Rolan and severely abused him. This incident left Rolan in an even worse state than before. Just as he was about to give up hope, Phantom, the leader of the Chess Pieces, found him and offered him kindness and support. He gave Rolan some food to survive and asked if he would like to follow him out of the village. Rolan eagerly accepted and joined the Chess Pieces.
As a member of the Chess Pieces, Rolan fought in the first War Games as a Rook or Bishop. Despite losing two battles against Alviss, he remained determined and continued to serve Phantom faithfully. He even has a zombie tattoo like Alviss, which shows his dedication to their leader.
Rolans desire to follow Phantom so desperately stems from his fear of losing someone again, as he did with his parents. Although Phantom hasn't shown much love towards him, Rolan continues to fight for the sake of eternity and Phantom, hoping that their bond will grow stronger over time.
