The Prince of Fanelia, known as Van Fanel, was a skilled pilot who piloted the powerful dragon Escaflowne. One day, while fighting a Dragon, Van suddenly appeared on Earth and found himself battling against his enemies. He was saved from certain death by Hitomi, a schoolgirl caught up in the battle. Despite this narrow escape, Van's kingdom was destroyed just a few days later. Driven by revenge, Van vowed to take down those responsible for his kingdom's destruction, even when he discovered that his supposedly dead brother Folken was working with them. With Hitomi's help, Van honed his fighting skills and began predicting his opponents' moves, giving him the upper hand in battle. However, Van was deeply affected by his blood-pact with Escaflowne, which required him to share any bodily damage it sustained during battles.
