At Yonomori shrine, there was a snake that Nanami saved from being killed by her cruel classmates. As a token of gratitude, the snake fell in love with Nanami and left an engagement mark on her wrist. The next day, he arrived at her school and took her to the shrine where she couldn't escape. Unlike other snakes, this one was raised in a greenhouse and had little knowledge about how most snakes behave.
Mizuki, another character in the story, is also lonely because his god has vanished. Although people once visited the shrine and believed in her, now no one lives in the valley, and Mizuki feels that she has dwindled away to nothing. However, he still believes that she exists and will return. As a result, he wants Nanami to live with him forever at his shrine, but when she refuses, he tries to rape her and is interrupted by Tomoe.
It turns out that the shrine was an illusion meant to hide Mizuki's favorite plum tree, which he treasured. Nanami promised to come look at the blossoms with him whenever he felt lonely. Like Kurama, Mizuki still seems to be harboring a crush on Nanami and even comes to cook for her when she is ill.
In chapter 23 Mizuki decided to become Nanamis familiar making a contract by kissing her while she slept.
