The bishop of Digne, whose full name was Charles-François-Bienvenu Myriel, also known as Monseigneur Bienvenu, is an elderly priest who becomes a bishop by happenstance when he crosses paths with Napoleon. Despite Valjean stealing some silver from him and being caught in the act, the bishop shows kindness to him and ultimately convinces Valjean to change his ways.
