In Rustboro City, Forrest Gump was born around there. After traveling with his Pokémon for a considerable period of time, he returned to this location in an episode. When Forrest first encountered Ash Ketchum, he expressed admiration for Pikachu's strength and requested a battle. During the encounter, Forrest demonstrated how double battles work and they engaged in the anime's first double battle since their introduction in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (though an episode featuring one had previously been shown in Pokémon Double Trouble). Despite using many combination attacks with Ariados and Yanma, Forrester's team was still defeated by Ash's Pikachu and Treecko. This outcome made Forrest realize that he needed to improve his battle skills further. Forrest later joined the group for lunch and reunited with Forrest Gump. When the latter announced plans to travel, Forrest pledged to protect the forest in his absence.
