In the novel "sans famille," gaspard, originally named garofoli, was a selfish and avaricious man who resided at groussinou avenue in paris. he exploited homeless kids by making them work and used the money he obtained from them for his own benefit. when he discovered that remi belonged to the affluent milligan family, he kidnapped the 10-year old girl with the intention of extorting a 10,000-franc ransom from mrs. milligan. however, gaspard's plan did not succeed as he failed to obtain the desired ransom money. as a result, he and the two other men involved in remi's kidnapping were apprehended by paris police officers. consequently, the homeless children who suffered at gaspard's hands were liberated from their cruelty.
