Nancy Schaal Bancroft, also known by her middle name Schaal, is John William Bancroft's daughter. She seeks to avenge her father's death by finding his murderer, Hank, a former platoon captain who has been hunting the "beasts" he once led. In order to uncover the truth behind her father's demise and why Hank believes Incarnates are better off killed by Beast Hunters, Schaal decides to travel with him.
Schaal grew up at an orphanage where she learned how to sew clothes for other children. She enjoys tea time and carries a china set in her suitcase while traveling. She strongly believes that the former Incarnate soldiers, who are often feared and looked down upon after the civil war, deserve humanity and respect.
