Two years ago, Miroku pledged to marry Shima, who was then an ill young woman. However, fate had other plans for her as she was later forced to become the wife of Nushi. When Sango discovered Shima's situation, she became enraged at Miroku for dishonoring her. Later on, Shima confessed to Sango that she lied about sleeping with Miroku in order to avoid being pursued by Nushi as a virgin bride. Despite this revelation, Shima still wished for Miroku and Sango to be together as the perfect couple.
