Maya is an Iriomote cat who was met by girls during their class trip to Okinawa on Iriomote Island. Despite being a kitten, he appears to have a strong liking for Sakaki. Tragically, Maya's mother passes away, prompting him to search for Sakaki and eventually finding them. With the help of Maya, Sakaki and Chiyo are saved from Kamineko and his gang. Afterward, Chiyo offers to keep Maya at her home until Sakaki can find a place of their own to house the kitten. In gratitude, Sakaki names Maya after Yamamaya, a term used by Iriomote natives.
