Souma is a serious individual who tends to be rigid in his thinking and quick to jump to conclusions when his emotions run high. When he feels strongly about something, he may draw his sword, which he carries everywhere. His family comes from the Kanzaki style and are well-known in the world of kendo. Although Souma is serious, he sometimes makes mistakes, but this quickly leads to self-blame and intense training. Despite his serious nature, he joined the Marine Bio Club, a club known for being suspicious, and has great respect for Kanata Shinkai. Although he does not get along with Kaoru Hakaze from the same club, he gets along well with Adonis Otogari, his classmate.
