The Vice-President of the Student Council and captain of the kendo team, Saionji, is the first duelist Utena fights. He has a temperamental personality, often exhibiting egotism, anger rages, cruelty, and extreme possessiveness over Anthy. His conviction that they are destined to be together regardless of circumstances drives him to become physically violent towards her even after their engagement is broken. Saionji practices kendo with Touga but harbors deep resentment towards him, especially when humiliated by him. Despite his best efforts, he struggles to surpass Touga's intelligence, skill, and perception, which exacerbates his estrangement from their childhood friendship.
