Utena Tenjou experienced significant adversity in childhood. Her parents passed away when she was young, and she nearly drowned before being saved by her prince. This prince's influence on her life has motivated Utena to pursue a path of nobility, striving to become a prince rather than a princess. Through this journey, she hopes to find her own prince and bring about revolution.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena is based on studio J.C.Staffs anime of the same title.The series was published in English as Revolutionary Girl Utena by VIZ Media from January 9, 2002 to March 3, 2004 and ran in their Shoujo anthology magazine Animerica Extra. The publisher re-released the series in a deluxe box set on April 11, 2017.
